Understand Your Audience

Before diving into keyword research, you need to really understand your target audience. Get to know your audience like a friend, so you can speak their language and meet their needs better.

When thinking about your ideal buyer, you want to be able to identify their demographics, interests, what challenges they face, and where they hang out online. You also want to try to understand their search intent: What problems are they trying to solve? What kind of information are they looking for?Keep in mind the language that your customer would use. For a detailed guide on how to echo your customer’s language, you can check out my post here.

Brainstorm Initial Keywords

Start by listing the core topics relevant to your business and think like a customer to brainstorm initial keywords. Consider what terms you would use if you were searching for your products or services. This will help you create a comprehensive list of potential keywords to research further.

Use Keyword Research Tools

There are many keyword research tools out there, like:

  • Google Keyword Planner: Offers insights into search volume and competition for keywords.
  • Ahrefs: Provides extensive data on keyword difficulty, search volume, and competitive analysis.
  • SEMrush: Useful for keyword research, competitive analysis, and tracking keyword performance.
  • Ubersuggest: A free tool that provides keyword suggestions, search volume, and competition data.

A free option that I love is simply typing your keyword into Google and seeing what terms are being frequently searched:

Analyze Competitors

Try taking a look at your competitors’ websites and messaging – not so you can copy – but so that you can identify what words are being used frequently within your market.

Focus on Long-Tail Keywords

Long-tail keywords, are longer and more specific phrases such as “eco-friendly baby clothes” or “affordable organic skincare products for sensitive skin”, or “handmade custom jewelry for weddings”.

These keywords usually have lower search volumes but are easier to rank for and often lead to higher conversion rates because they can help you reach a more specific audience that is closer to making a purchase.

Content Strategy and Keyword Integration into your Content Strategy

Once you have your keywords, it’s time to incorporate them into your content strategy.

Sprinkle your keywords naturally into your titles, headings, meta descriptions, and throughout your social and email content. The goal is to deliver helpful info that directly addresses what people are looking for, all while keeping it easy to read and totally on point. This not only amps up your SEO game but also makes sure your audience stays engaged and gets what they came for. The goal is to hit that sweet spot where search engines and your readers both say, “This is exactly what I needed!”
